How Highland clans did it

Mac means "son of". A clan was named for its founding ancestor: MacDonald, the sons of Donald.
Mottos sit on a strap and buckle round the crest on a clansman's badge. Many are short and fierce; some are in Gaelic or Latin.
War cries were shouted to rally the clan, often the name of a gathering place or a hill. The Gaelic for a host's cry, sluagh-ghairm, is where English gets the word slogan.
