Players always ask the name of the person you didn't plan for. This NPC name generator gives you a ready-made villager, merchant or guard in one click: a name that fits their race, what they do, and a quirk that makes them stick.
What makes a memorable NPC
A memorable NPC needs three things: a name that fits, a job, and one detail players will remember.
- The name should suit their people: a dwarf called Udok Runemail, a halfling called Brimble Pottle, a tiefling with a virtue name like Trust or Resolve.
- The job tells players why this person matters, or doesn't: a wigmaker, a chimney sweep, a candlemaker.
- One quirk is enough. The D&D 5e Dungeon Master's Guide has tables of NPC mannerisms and traits for the same reason: a single habit, like mispronouncing every name, does more than a page of backstory.
Using it at the table
- Keep a list ready. Generate a batch before the session and tick names off as you use them, so the blacksmith keeps the same name next week.
- Pick a format: name only for a quick answer, name and job for a crowd scene, or name, job and quirk for someone the party will talk to.
- Choose a race to people a dwarven hold or an elven town, or leave it on Any for a busy market.
- Need a letter? The Starts with option gives names beginning with the letter you choose. The letters on offer change with the race and gender, so you only see letters with plenty of names.
