The game's cast is a good guide to the style. Among the students and staff you meet:
- Sebastian Sallow (Slytherin), whose search for a cure for his twin sister Anne leads him somewhere dark.
- Ominis Gaunt (Slytherin), from the family descended from Salazar Slytherin himself.
- Amit Thakkar (Ravenclaw), the classmate who'd rather be stargazing.
- Garreth Weasley (Gryffindor), forever brewing something he shouldn't, and Leander Prewett (Gryffindor).
- Everett Clopton (Hufflepuff).

Notice the mix: plain English surnames (Sallow, Sharp, Clopton), famous wizarding families (Gaunt, Weasley, Prewett, Black) and names from around the world (Thakkar, Ronen).
Victorian first names
The first names here are ones a wizard born around 1880 might really have had. Some were among the most popular boys' names in late Victorian Britain: Arthur, Albert, Frederick, Ernest, Walter. Others have the grand, old-fashioned ring the wizarding world loves, like Phineas, Eleazar and Aesop in the game: Septimus, Thaddeus, Peregrine, Mordecai.
Like the game's own cast, a handful come from further afield: Arjun, Kenji, Emeka, Mateo, Idris.
Surnames by house
The books don't give the houses naming rules, so this generator leans into each house's character instead. Every surname list is made of real-sounding British names:
- Gryffindor: bold, outdoorsy names (Hardwick, Wolfe, Fairweather).
- Hufflepuff: warm, homely, slightly whimsical names (Applegate, Merriweather, Kettle).
- Ravenclaw: bookish, airy names (Inkpen, Featherstone, Lark).
- Slytherin: old-money, aristocratic names (Cavendish, Mordaunt, Ravenscroft), in the tradition of Malfoy, Rosier and Selwyn.

Naming your character in the game
- The game asks for a first and last name, and won't accept every word, so keep it simple.
- Say it the way a professor would. "Mr Clopton" and "Mr Thakkar" are how you'll be addressed in class, so make sure the surname works with a title.
- Think about family. A surname like Gaunt or Weasley tells everyone your background. A new name, like the ones here, lets your character's story be their own.
- Match the decade. Names like Kayden or Brooklyn would stand out in the 1890s; Florence, Edith, Arthur and Albert fit right in.
