A good gamertag is short, easy to read in a kill feed and still free on the platform you play on. This gamertag generator makes tags in four styles (cool, funny, fantasy and short four-letter tags) and can mix in a word or name of your own, so you end up with something that's yours.
Each platform's name rules
- Xbox: gamertags can be up to 12 characters and include spaces. Since 2019, if the name you want is taken, Xbox lets you keep it with a number suffix (like #1234) shown after it.
- Discord: since 2023, every account has a unique username of 2 to 32 characters, using lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and full stops, plus a separate display name that can be anything.
- Instagram: usernames can be up to 30 characters, with letters, numbers, full stops and underscores.
- TikTok: usernames can be up to 24 characters, with letters, numbers, underscores and full stops.
Rules change from time to time, so check the platform's own sign-up page if a name won't go through.
What makes a good gamertag
- Short. Teammates need to call it out in a hurry. Two parts at most.
- Readable. Avoid swapping letters for numbers (Sh4d0w) unless it's a joke; it's hard to say and easy to misspell.
- Yours. Add a word you actually like, a nickname or an in-joke, with Include your own word.
- Clean. Every name here is family-friendly, and platforms do remove offensive names.
If your favourite is taken
- Add a number that means something to you, not a random one.
- Try another style. A fantasy tag (Runeblade) is less likely to be taken than a cool one (ShadowWolf).
- Go short. Four-letter tags are rare on old platforms but you'll often find an invented one free.
