A werewolf pack is a family as much as a hunting party, and its name says where it runs and what it's known for. This werewolf pack name generator makes classic pack names, names tied to a territory, and wilder names linked to the moon, with an alpha to lead them if you like.
How real wolf packs work
A real wolf pack is a family: usually a breeding pair and their offspring from the last few years.
- The "alpha" idea came from studies of unrelated captive wolves. The biologist L. David Mech popularised the term in his 1970 book The Wolf, and spent years afterwards explaining that wild packs don't work that way: the "alphas" are simply the parents.
- Territory matters: wild packs hold a home range and defend it, which is why naming a pack after its land feels right.
- Werewolf fiction kept the alpha anyway, because a pack with a leader to challenge makes a better story.
Naming your pack
A pack name should say where it runs or what it's known for.
- Classic pack names join a colour or feature to a wolf word: the Greytail Pack, the Stormfang Pack.
- Named for the land: the Wolves of Cold Hollow, the Pack of Hollow Moor.
- Wild: moon names, like Children of the Hungry Moon. Folk names for the full moons include the Wolf Moon in January and the Harvest Moon nearest the autumn equinox.
- Add an alpha to name the pack's leader too.
