In cyberpunk, nobody uses their real name if they can help it. Hackers, fixers and mercenaries go by handles, short and memorable, while the real power sits with megacorporations whose names sound clean and slightly sinister. Where cyberpunk names come from
The genre takes its name from Bruce Bethke's 1983 short story "Cyberpunk", and its look from William Gibson's novel Neuromancer (1984) and the film Blade Runner (1982). Gibson's hacker is known simply as Case, and the street samurai as Molly. In Cyberpunk 2077, the player character goes by a single letter, V.
The pattern is the same throughout: a short handle that says something about the person, and a real name kept quiet.
Handles, names and megacorps
- Handles are one or two short words: a skill (Cipher, Socket), an attitude (Vandal), or a look (Chrome). They should be quick to say over comms.
- Full names with a handle mix cultures, because cyberpunk cities are global: Mara "Static" Okafor, Kai "Wire" Lindqvist.
- Megacorporations have smooth, abstract names that sound like a brochure: Helix Biotech, Meridian Dynamics. The friendlier the name, the worse the company.
