After the end of the world, names get practical. A survivor goes by what they're good at, a settlement by what it used to be, and a raider by whatever frightens people most. This post-apocalyptic name generator names survivors, raiders, mutants, settlements and wasteland factions.
Naming after the end of the world
After the collapse, names get practical: people are called what they do, places what they used to be.
- Survivors keep their real name and earn a nickname: Lyle "Wick" Price.
- Raiders go by something meant to frighten: Scab the Butcher.
- Mutants are named for what changed: Many-Eyes, Two-Heads the Twice-Born.
- Settlements are named for the ruins they're built in: Tin Can Crossing.
- Factions sound like they're trying to restore order, or bury it: the Ash Wardens, the Copper Assembly.
A short history of the end
Post-apocalyptic fiction is older than it looks.
- Mary Shelley's The Last Man (1826) follows the last survivor of a plague.
- After the atom bomb, the genre took off: Walter M. Miller Jr.'s A Canticle for Leibowitz (1959) imagines monks preserving knowledge for centuries after a nuclear war.
- The wasteland look of leather, rust and fuel came from the Mad Max films from 1979 onwards, and games like Fallout made it a setting players could live in.
The names here are new, and not taken from any game or film. For the dead that walk the wasteland, try the Zombie Name Generator, and for the gangs, the Clan Name Generator.
