Superhero names follow a handful of shapes that comics have used since the 1930s: an adjective and a noun (Green Lantern), something-Man or -Woman (Spider-Man, Wonder Woman), a title (Captain America, Doctor Strange) or one bold word (Storm). This superhero name generator builds names in all of them, avoiding the famous ones.

The classic shapes

  • Something-Man or -Woman: Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman. The power or theme, then who they are.
  • Adjective and noun: Green Lantern, Black Panther, Scarlet Witch.
  • A title: Captain America, Doctor Strange, Mister Fantastic, Ms. Marvel. A title adds authority or a hint of the person's job.
  • One word: Storm, Cyclops, Rogue. Short and easy to shout.
  • The and a noun: The Flash, The Atom.

Making your hero's name work

  • Say what they do, or what they stand for. A name that hints at the power saves an explanation.
  • Check it isn't taken. The big comic publishers have used thousands of names; search before you fall in love with one, especially if you're publishing.
  • Think about the real name too. Comics love alliteration: Peter Parker, Bruce Banner, Wally West.
