Pegasus in Greek myth
In Greek myth, Pegasus sprang from the neck of the Gorgon Medusa when the hero Perseus cut off her head.
- Bellerophon tamed him with a golden bridle from the goddess Athena, and rode him to kill the fire-breathing Chimera.
- The Hippocrene spring on Mount Helicon, home of the Muses, was said to have burst from the ground where Pegasus struck it with his hoof. Its name means "horse's spring".
- A constellation: after Bellerophon fell trying to ride him up to Olympus, Pegasus was placed among the stars, where the Great Square of Pegasus still marks him.
