There are two sphinxes. The Greek sphinx sat outside Thebes and asked travellers a riddle, killing those who got it wrong. The Egyptian sphinx, like the Great Sphinx of Giza, is a lion with a human head that guards temples and tombs. This sphinx name generator names both, and sphinxes named for the gate they guard.
Two kinds of sphinx
The Greek and Egyptian sphinxes share a lion's body and a human head, and very little else.
- The Greek sphinx had a woman's head, a lion's body and wings. She sat outside Thebes and asked every traveller a riddle: what walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon and three in the evening? Oedipus answered "a human", and she threw herself to her death.
- The Egyptian sphinx is usually male, with a king's head on a lion's body: a guardian, not a riddler.
- The Great Sphinx of Giza, about 73 metres long, is usually dated to the reign of the pharaoh Khafre, around 2500 BC.
Naming a sphinx
- Greek riddlers get Greek names (Krypteia, "hidden").
- Egyptian-style names are built from real Egyptian name parts, like those in the Mummy Name Generator, like Merankh and Amenka.
- Guardians are named for what they guard: the Sphinx of the Sealed Library, the Winged Sphinx of the Sun Gate.
