Every hero needs someone to hold the torch, mind the base and occasionally save the day. This sidekick name generator makes names for young heroes in training, animal sidekicks and the gloriously unheroic, with a title if they've earned one.
A short history of the sidekick
The first great superhero sidekick was Robin, who joined Batman in Detective Comics #38 in 1940.
- Robin's success led to a wave of young sidekicks through the 1940s, many named after their hero with "Kid" or "Boy" attached.
- The word sidekick dates from the early 1900s. It probably comes from pickpockets' slang, where a "kick" was a pocket and the side pocket was the hardest to pick, so the person always at your side was your side-kicker.
- Animal sidekicks are just as old as human ones, from cartoon dogs to talking birds.
Naming your sidekick
- Young heroes often echo their mentor, with Kid, Young or Wonder in front: Kid Frost, Young Comet.
- Animal sidekicks get a name and a talent: Rocket the Amazing Hedgehog.
- Funny sidekicks are the ones who'd rather not be there: Doctor Eventually, Kevin from Logistics.
- Add a role to say what they actually do, from driving the getaway car to keeping the snacks.
