The yeti, or abominable snowman, is the ape-like creature said to walk the high Himalayas, known mostly from footprints in the snow. This yeti name generator makes fierce mountain names like Frostmane, cute names for toys and Christmas stories, and funny names for a yeti called Big Fred.

The yeti and the abominable snowman

The yeti comes from the folklore of the Himalayas, where the Sherpa people tell of a large, ape-like creature of the high snows.

  • "Abominable snowman" came from a mistranslation. In 1921 a British Everest expedition reported tracks in the snow, and a newspaper writer turned the local name into "abominable snowman".
  • The famous footprint was photographed by the mountaineer Eric Shipton in 1951.
  • DNA tests on hair, bones and other "yeti" samples in recent years have found they came from bears, mostly Himalayan and Tibetan brown bears, and in one case a dog.

Naming a yeti

  • Fierce yeti names sound like ice and avalanche: Frostmane, Avalanchefoot.
  • Cute names suit a cuddly toy or a children's story: Snowboots, Little Snowdrop.
  • Funny names make the most of a giant hairy snowman with an ordinary name: Big Fred, Steve.
