In legend, the phoenix lives for centuries, burns and is reborn from its own ashes, so its name should sound like fire and dawn. This phoenix name generator makes fiery names like Emberwing, ancient-sounding names like Aithon and Flamma, and cute names for a pet phoenix in a game or story.
The phoenix in legend
The oldest detailed account of the phoenix comes from the Greek historian Herodotus, writing in the 400s BC.
- Herodotus heard in Egypt of a red and gold bird that came to the sun temple at Heliopolis once every 500 years, carrying its dead father in an egg of myrrh. He admitted he'd only seen pictures of it.
- Rebirth: later writers, the Roman poet Ovid among them, describe the phoenix building a nest of spices and being born again, the only bird that renews itself. The fiery rebirth from ashes became the best-known version.
- The bennu, a heron-like bird of Egyptian religion linked to the sun god and to Heliopolis, is often suggested as one of the phoenix's roots.
- The Chinese fenghuang is often translated as "phoenix", but it's a different bird, linked to harmony and to the empress rather than to rebirth.
Naming a phoenix
A phoenix name should sound like fire, sunrise or something that refuses to stay dead.
- Fiery names join fire and flight: Emberwing, Cindersong, Ashheart.
- Ancient names borrow Greek and Latin fire words. Aithon and Phlegon, "blazing" and "burning", were the names of two of the sun god's horses; add "of Heliopolis" for Herodotus's version.
- Cute names suit a small fiery pet: Little Clementine, Popcorn.
