Good fortress names sound like they'll never fall: Dawnward, Kaldnar Fastness, Fort Steadfast. A castle is a home with walls, but a fortress exists to hold the line. This fortress name generator builds names for heroic bastions, dwarven fastnesses, orc strongholds, dark citadels, frontier forts and sci-fi fortress worlds, with an optional line of history for your campaign.
Eight good fortress names
All eight came from the generator, across its six styles:
- Dawnward: a one-word name for a fortress that faces the enemy at sunrise.
- Vigilgate, where the paladins train their squires: a heroic fortress with a purpose.
- Kaldnar Fastness, that held out against goblins for forty winters: a dwarven stronghold with a reputation.
- Kragzug, whose chieftain wears a crown made of a cooking pot: an orc stronghold with a sense of humour.
- The Smouldering Bulwark, its gates carved with the faces of the conquered: a dark fortress you don't want to visit.
- Fort Ashwell, manned by twelve soldiers and a very old dog: a frontier fort that's barely holding on.
- Fort Hawk Ridge, its commander a disgraced knight with something to prove: a frontier post with a ready-made NPC.
- Redoubt Theta, commanded by an AI that has never slept: a sci-fi fortress with a military code name.
How fortresses got their names
Many British place names began as fortifications. Alfred the Great built a network of burhs, fortified towns, against the Vikings, and the Old English burh survives in endings like -bury and -borough. Older still, the Roman castra, a military camp, gave English the -chester, -caster and -cester of Chester, Lancaster and Leicester. Before both, Iron Age people built hillforts like Maiden Castle in Dorset, one of the largest in Britain.
- Fantasy fortresses use words for holding the line: ward, wall, gate, bulwark, redoubt.
- Dwarven ones are fastnesses, an old word for a stronghold, cut into the rock.
- Orcish strongholds are named for what's nailed to the gate: Three Skulls Stronghold.
- Dark fortresses are citadels of ash and doom.
- Frontier forts are stockades, blockhouses and lookouts named for the nearest landmark.
- Sci-fi fortresses take code names with Greek letters: Sentinel Lambda.
Choose With a line of history for something worth knowing about it, from its armoury to its commander.
Using a fortress in your campaign
- Ask what it guards. A pass, a ford, a border or a secret: the answer shapes the name.
- Give it a siege. A fortress that held for forty winters has veterans and ghosts.
- Fortress or castle? If a family lives in it, it's a castle. If an army does, it's a fortress.
