Good fantasy world names are short and sound like the story: Seraneth for bright high fantasy, Mournhollow for a dying world, Worldloom for a realm of the gods. The Fantasy World Name Generator names the worlds and realms of your D&D campaign, novel or game, from shining high-fantasy worlds to dying dark ones, mythic realms of the gods and hidden fey kingdoms.
Eight good fantasy world names
All eight came from the generator, across its four styles:
- Seraneth: a flowing high-fantasy name, easy to say every session.
- Ildathera, the Shining World: a name with a title, for an epic.
- Isaevael: "the valley of wisdom" in the generator's old tongue.
- Mournhollow: a dark world named for grief.
- Blightdeep, the Sunless World: a dark fantasy setting in two words and a title.
- Fateloom: "the loom of destiny", for a world shaped by the gods.
- Brackenwild: a fey realm of hedgerows and wild places.
- The Twilight Kingdom of Nettlering: a fairy court with a sting in its name.
How fantasy worlds are named
Many fantasy worlds are named for what they mean to the people who live there. Norse myth has Midgard, the "middle enclosure" where people live, joined to the other worlds by the tree Yggdrasil. Tolkien's Middle-earth comes from the Old English middangeard, the same idea, and his whole world is Arda. D&D's settings have their own: Toril is the world of the Forgotten Realms, and Krynn the world of Dragonlance.
- High fantasy names are soft and bright, with endings like -eth, -aris and -vael.
- Dark fantasy names are English compounds of grief and decay: Dreadbarrow, Rustfall.
- Mythic names are big ideas made into places: Stormanvil, Heavenhalls.
- Fey names come from the hedgerow: hawthorn, bramble and thistle.

Naming your world
- Decide who's speaking. The people of a world might call it "the earth" or "the land"; scholars and gods might have a grander name.
- Keep it short. You'll say it a lot, so two or three syllables work best.
- Name the planes too. A world with a fey realm next door needs both names: try a high-fantasy world and a fey court.
Then fill it in: the Continent Name Generator for its landmasses, the Island Name Generator for its seas, and the Kingdom and Village name generators for the people. For a world in space, try the Planet Name Generator.
