Githyanki are raiders from the Astral Plane, and their names sound like orders being given. Baldur's Gate 3 made them famous through Lae'zel, and the pattern is easy to hear: short, hard syllables, often split by an apostrophe. This githyanki name generator builds names in that style, and can add a rank like kith'rak or gish.
Who the githyanki are
In D&D, the githyanki are one half of the gith, a people who once overthrew the mind flayers who enslaved them. After their freedom they split in two: the githyanki, who became warlike raiders, and the githzerai, who turned to discipline and meditation.
The githyanki live on the Astral Plane, ruled by their undying lich-queen Vlaakith from the city of Tu'narath. They ride red dragons into battle, and their warriors carry the famous silver swords. Their hatred of mind flayers drives much of Baldur's Gate 3's story.
What githyanki names sound like
The githyanki you meet in Baldur's Gate 3 show the pattern: Lae'zel, the companion; Kith'rak Voss, whose name begins with his rank; and the inquisitor W'wargaz.
- Apostrophes break names into short, clipped parts: Ry'zath, Ka'zira.
- Hard consonants: k, z, th, v and r, with few soft sounds.
- Short. Two syllables, three at most. A githyanki name is meant to be barked.
All the names here are new, so your character won't share a name with someone from the game.
Githyanki ranks
Githyanki society is military, and rank matters. In Baldur's Gate 3, kith'rak is a high rank: Kith'rak Voss leads a githyanki patrol hunting for the party. A gish is a warrior who also casts spells, the githyanki answer to a fighter-wizard.
The With a rank format puts a rank before the name, as Voss's does. Lower ranks like warrior and knight suit a player character just setting out; kith'rak suits a villain.
