Who the dark elves are
- In D&D, dark elves are the drow, who live in the Underdark and worship the spider goddess Lolth. Their society is ruled by women: the Matron Mothers of the great houses and the priestesses beneath them.
- In Tolkien, "Dark Elves" meant something gentler: elves who never saw the light of Valinor. Not evil, just elves who stayed behind.

Houses and titles
Drow cities like Menzoberranzan are ruled by noble houses, ranked against each other and always plotting. A drow is introduced by house, and the house name often comes with an apostrophe, as in Drizzt Do'Urden.
- Female titles: Matron Mother (the head of the house), High Priestess, First Daughter.
- Male titles: Weapons Master (in charge of the house's fighters), Archmage, Patron (the Matron Mother's consort).

Playing a drow
- Decide where you stand with your house. Loyal, exiled, or secretly working against it: every drow story starts there.
- Female drow outrank male drow in traditional drow society. A male drow with ambition, or a female drow who walked away from power, is an instant character.
- The surface is strange. Sunlight blinds them in many settings. A drow who has come up into the light has given something up to do it.
