This Minecraft pet name generator has name tag ideas for wolves, cats, horses, parrots, axolotls, foxes, llamas, camels, frogs and allays, in cute, cool, funny and food styles. A name tag keeps your pets from despawning and makes them easier to find, and a good name makes them family.
How to name a pet in Minecraft
To name a pet in Minecraft, tame it, rename a name tag on an anvil, then use the name tag on the pet.
- Taming first: wolves are tamed with bones, cats with raw fish, parrots with seeds, and horses and llamas by riding them until they stop throwing you off. Camels don't need taming: just put a saddle on. Axolotls and frogs can't be tamed, but you can carry axolotls in a bucket and name them.
- Naming: rename a name tag on an anvil (one level of experience), then use it on the pet. Named mobs don't despawn, and the name makes it easier to find in a crowd of cats.
- Allays will follow you once you give them an item, so they deserve a name too.
Secret Minecraft name tag names
Some names change how a mob looks or behaves when you put them on a name tag.
A few names do something special when you use them on a mob (most of these are Java Edition):
- Dinnerbone or Grumm: the mob turns upside down.
- jeb_: a sheep cycles through every colour of the rainbow.
- Toast: a rabbit gets a special coat.
- Johnny: a vindicator attacks almost every mob it sees, so keep it away from your pets.
And the pink axolotl is called lucy in the game's files. For your villagers, try the Minecraft Villager Name Generator.
