How to rename an item in Minecraft
To rename an item in Minecraft, put it in an anvil, type the new name and take it out.
- Put the tool or weapon in the first slot of an anvil.
- Type the new name in the box at the top. Names can be up to 50 characters.
- Take it out. Renaming an item that hasn't been on an anvil before costs one level of experience; more if it has.
A custom name shows in italics and stays with the item, even if you enchant or repair it later. It's the best way to tell your Fortune III pickaxe from your Silk Touch one at a glance.
