Good orchestra names pair a town with a size of orchestra, from a Sinfonia to a full Philharmonic, while quartets and new-music groups pick a single striking word. This orchestra name generator invents believable places and pairs them with real orchestra types, and it also names ensembles, concert seasons and albums.
Eight good orchestra names
All eight came from the generator:
- Ashcombe Sinfonia: a town and a sinfonia, the usual name for a smaller orchestra.
- Oak Valley Philharmonic Orchestra: the full name for a full-size orchestra.
- Camerata Kingsmere: camerata, for a chamber group, put first in the Italian way.
- The Tarnbury Players: a modest, friendly name for an amateur orchestra.
- Corvus Quartet: corvus is Latin for crow: one striking word for a string quartet.
- Westmere Brass Quintet: a place and the exact line-up, so promoters know what they're booking.
- Kestrel Consort: consort is the old English word for a group of instruments.
- Pirates & Adventurers: Music from the Movies: a family concert title that says what's on the programme.
Symphony, Philharmonic, Sinfonia: what the names mean
- Symphony and Philharmonic orchestras are the same size; philharmonic is Greek for "loving harmony". Cities with more than one orchestra use both, which is why London has the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic.
- Chamber orchestra and sinfonia mean a smaller band, often of a few dozen players, as with the City of London Sinfonia.
- Camerata recalls the Florentine Camerata, a group of musicians and thinkers in late 16th-century Florence.
- Consort was the Elizabethan word for a group of instruments, and early-music ensembles still use it.
- Quartets often take one word, a person or a place: the Amadeus, Brodsky and Kronos Quartets.
Choose Orchestra for a full or chamber orchestra, Ensemble or quartet for smaller groups like Red Cedar Piano Trio, and Concert or album for season and programme titles like Midsummer Dances or Halloween Spooktacular.
Naming your orchestra
- Lead with the place if you're a community or youth orchestra. It's how audiences and funders will look for you.
- Use the right size word. A twenty-player group calling itself a Philharmonic sets expectations it can't meet.
- For concerts, name the programme or the occasion: a composer and a season, a theme, or the films you're playing.
