A good composer name is one a music supervisor will remember and find again: your own name, set out cleanly, like Tamsin Hargreaves, a short alias like Lowlight for side projects, or a studio name like Northlight Sound. Most screen composers credit their own name, but plenty release library, ambient or game music under an alias, and nearly everyone needs a name for their studio. This composer name generator gives you all three.
Eight good composer names
All eight came from the generator:
- Tamsin Hargreaves: a full name that reads well in end credits.
- Rakel M. Eklund: a middle initial helps when your name is common.
- Leif Sørensen: a name that sounds right on a Nordic drama.
- Lowlight: a one-word alias for ambient or library work.
- Late Harbour: an alias that hints at the music: slow, quiet, a bit melancholy.
- KR-07: a code-like alias for electronic or game music.
- Northlight Sound: a studio name that works on an invoice and a cue sheet.
- Pryce & Fletcher: two surnames, for a writing partnership.
Your name, an alias or a studio
- Your own name is the usual credit for film and television work, and it's what directors and supervisors will search for. The Full name format makes credible names, with the gender filter.
- An alias keeps different kinds of work apart, so an ambient album doesn't sit next to your trailer cues. Electronic musicians do this a lot: Richard D. James has released music as Aphex Twin, AFX and Polygon Window. Choose Alias or mononym.
- A studio or production company name looks professional on contracts and publishing paperwork. Hans Zimmer's company is Remote Control Productions. Choose Studio for names like Brass Lantern Audio or Clockwork Media Music.
Before you use a name
- Check it's free on streaming services, IMDb and in library catalogues.
- Register it properly. If you release under an alias, check how your performing rights organisation handles aliases, so the royalties still reach you.
- Use the same name everywhere: credits, distributors, your website and social media. If you need to change it later, Composer HQ explains how to change your artist name on DistroKid.
