A World of Warcraft orc needs a name that sounds like the Horde, fits the game's rules and isn't already taken on your realm. This WoW orc name generator gives you names that do all three, male and female, plus an earned surname or a clan if you want a story to go with it: Rokgath Ashbrand, Magira of the Frostwolf clan.
Fitting the name into the game
- 2 to 12 letters, no spaces. The name you type at character creation is one word. Surnames and clans are for your profile, role-play addons and your own head-canon.
- No three of the same letter in a row. The game rejects names like Grommm. Every name in the "fits in game" format follows both rules.
- One per realm. If the name's taken, the game will tell you. Generate a batch and keep a few backups.
- Accents. Players often add an accent to get round a taken name (Rókgath). It works, but makes you harder to whisper.
How Warcraft orcs are named
- Earned surnames. Many lore orcs carry a name that tells a story: Grom Hellscream, a name that's a battle cry in itself; Kilrogg Deadeye, who put out his own eye for a vision. Orgrim's Doomhammer is the family weapon.
- Names given by others. Thrall's name was a slave name, given by the human who raised him; his birth name is Go'el. A name can be a wound as much as a title.
- Clans. Before the Horde united, an orc was their clan first: the Frostwolves of Durotan, the Warsong of Grom, the Blackrock of Blackhand. Saying which clan you come from says what you've lived through.
The clans
- Frostwolf: honourable, shamanistic, exiled to Alterac. Good for a shaman or a lore-minded character.
- Warsong: fierce and proud, the clan of Grom and Garrosh.
- Blackrock: disciplined and brutal, the old heart of the Horde's armies.
- Bleeding Hollow, Shattered Hand, Dragonmaw and the rest each have their own history. A clan with a dark past makes for a character trying to live it down.
Role-playing an orc
- Earn the surname in play. Start with just a first name, and add the surname when something happens to deserve it.
- Pick a clan for its story, not its stats: a Frostwolf and a Dragonmaw will see the same event very differently.
- Female orcs in lore have short, hard names too (Draka, Aggra, Garona). The female names here follow that sound.
