What makes a plumbing name work
The word plumber comes from the Latin plumbum, lead, because pipes were once made of it. Most firms still name themselves in one of a few plain ways:
- Say the job. Customers search for "plumber near me" or "boiler repair", so a name with Plumbing, Heating or Drainage in it is easier to find and to trust.
- Puns work on vans. Pipe Down or Kitchen Sink Drama gets a smile at the traffic lights. Keep them clean, and add a straight slogan so people know you're qualified.
- Family and town names sound settled and local, which matters for a trade people let into their homes.
- Gas work needs registration. In the UK, anyone working on gas appliances such as boilers must be on the Gas Safe Register, so only put gas or boiler work in your name if you're registered.
Check it's free before you print the sign
A plumbing name ends up on a van, a website, a Google Business Profile and a stack of invoices, so it's worth a few minutes' checking before any of that is printed:
- Press Check on any name above. The Business Name Checker looks up the domain, links to the company register (Companies House in the UK) and opens the trade mark search and social handles.
- Search your area. Look up the name on a map and in local search results. Two firms with the same name a few miles apart confuse customers and reviews.
- If you do gas work, show your Gas Safe registration next to the name on your van and website, not instead of it.

Getting the name onto the van
- Read it at a distance. A short name and a phone number are what people remember from a passing van.
- Add a slogan if the name is a joke. Choose Name with a slogan for lines like Warm homes, clear drains.
- Use the same name everywhere: van, invoices, Google Business Profile and social media.
