A wizard's staff is half walking stick, half weapon and half the reason anyone takes the wizard seriously. This staff name generator names wizards' and druids' staffs, fighting quarterstaffs and funny staffs, for D&D characters, stories and games.
Four kinds of staff
- Wizard's staffs get a grand, compound name and sometimes a title: Rootwhisper, Moonfall, Staff of the Northern Stars.
- Druid's staffs are named after the wood they're cut from. The Roman writer Pliny the Elder recorded that the druids of Gaul held the oak sacred, and British folklore credits rowan with protecting against witchcraft, so you'll see Oakheart and the Rowan Staff of the First Spring.
- Fighting staffs are for the quarterstaff, a plain wooden pole of six to nine feet that was a common weapon in medieval and Tudor England. They sound like what they do: Bonecracker, Shincracker, the Last Argument.
- Funny staffs don't take themselves seriously: the Stick of Moderate Power, the Suspiciously Sticky Driftwood Stick, or just Gerald.
Using a staff in D&D
In D&D 5th edition a wizard can use a staff as an arcane focus and a druid can use a wooden staff as a druidic focus, so a spellcaster's staff is often with them for the whole campaign. That makes it worth naming. A quarterstaff is also a simple weapon anyone can use, which is why monks carry them too.
Name the person holding it with the Wizard Name Generator or the Druid Name Generator. For a smaller tool, try the Wand Name Generator, and for other weapons the Sword Name Generator.
