Druids take their power from the natural world, and many fantasy druids carry names from Welsh and Celtic tradition or straight from the plants they tend. This druid name generator gives D&D 5e druids a first name rooted in the old woods and an epithet for their Druid Circle, from the shapeshifting Circle of the Moon to the Circle of Spores.
Druids in history and in D&D
Real druids were the priests and scholars of the ancient Celtic world, in Gaul and Britain.
- Julius Caesar wrote that they trained for up to twenty years and learned everything by heart, never in writing.
- Pliny the Elder described druids cutting mistletoe from an oak with a golden sickle. The word druid may mean "oak-knower".
- In D&D, druids draw power from nature, take animal form with Wild Shape, and join a Circle: the Land and the Moon in the Player's Handbook, and Dreams, Shepherd, Spores, Stars and Wildfire in later books.
Naming a druid
Druid names here come from Welsh tradition and from plants: Meurig, Idris, Alder, Fern, Linden.
- The epithet follows the Circle: a Moon druid "Who Runs with Wolves", a Stars druid "the Star-Reader", a Wildfire druid "Child of the Blaze".
- Famous figures of Welsh myth, like Taliesin and Ceridwen, are left out, so every name is yours.
