Valkyries are the choosers of the slain in Norse myth, who carried fallen warriors to Valhalla. Their names were built from Old Norse words for battle, spears and shields. This valkyrie name generator builds names the same way, from real Old Norse name parts, with a title if you want one.
What a valkyrie is
Valkyrie comes from the Old Norse valkyrja, "chooser of the slain": the women who served Odin and chose which warriors would die in battle.
- Valhalla: the chosen dead were carried to Odin's hall, Valhalla, to feast and fight until the end of the world.
- Real names: Norse poems list valkyries by name, such as Hildr ("battle"), Þrúðr ("strength") and Skǫgul. The names are warlike because the valkyries were.
How valkyrie names are built
Old Norse names, valkyries' included, were usually made of two parts, and the generator joins real ones.
- Sig- means victory, Geir- spear, Hjor- sword and Bryn- mail armour.
- Rand- is the rim of a shield, Gunn- means war, Hild- battle and Val- the slain.
- Svan- means swan, Hrafn- raven and Ulf- wolf.
- Endings include -hild (battle), -run (secret, or rune) and -dis (goddess, or lady).
So Sigrun is "victory secret" and Ulfdis "wolf lady". For more Norse names, try the Viking and Nord name generators.
