The Altmer, or high elves, of the Summerset Isles think very highly of themselves, and their names sound like it: long, flowing and formal. In Skyrim you meet them as Ancano at the College of Winterhold and as the Thalmor's Elenwen and Ondolemar. This Altmer name generator gives you names in the same style, for Skyrim, Elder Scrolls Online or your own Tamriel story.
What Altmer names sound like
- Long: three or four syllables is normal. Ondolemar, Ancarion.
- Soft consonants (l, n, r, m) and open vowels, with few harsh sounds.
- Male names often end in -o, -ar or -il: Ancano, Estormo and Ondolemar in Skyrim.
- Female names often end in -we, -wen or -a: Elenwen, Nirya and Faralda.
Altmer names are usually used alone. That suits a people who believe they're descended from the gods and don't feel the need to explain their family.
Altmer in Skyrim
Most Altmer in Skyrim belong to the Thalmor, the government of the Aldmeri Dominion. Elenwen is the Thalmor ambassador, Ondolemar commands the Thalmor in Markarth, and Ancano is the Thalmor adviser who causes trouble at the College of Winterhold.
Not every Altmer is Thalmor. Faralda and Nirya teach at the College, and Ancarion lives in Solitude. An Altmer character who isn't Thalmor has an easy source of tension in any Nord town.
Using the names
- Let it be long. An Altmer won't shorten their name for anyone, which says a lot about them.
- Add a title if they're important: Justiciar, First Emissary, Magister.
- Elder Scrolls Online needs unique names, and a long Altmer name is more likely to be free.
