Good bluegrass band names come from mountains, creeks and hollers, or from the leader out front, a habit that goes back to Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys. This bluegrass band name generator makes band names, picker names and album titles in that high, lonesome style, plus a few jamgrass curveballs.
Eight good bluegrass band names
All eight came from the generator, bands, pickers and albums:
- Buddy Neace & the Mountain Boys: a leader and the Boys, the original bluegrass shape.
- The Fugate Brothers: brother duos have been at the heart of bluegrass since the start.
- The Harlan County Pickers: a real Kentucky county and what the band does.
- The Kanawha Sweethearts: a West Virginia river and an old-fashioned name for a female group.
- Crawdad Breakdown: a jamgrass-style name with a bit of fun in it.
- Hoss Cornett: a nickname picker, like Curly or Red.
- Wilma Jean Spurlock: a double first name and an Appalachian surname.
- Banjo Weather: an album title that sounds like a fiddle tune.
How bluegrass names itself
Bluegrass is named after one band: Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys, who took their name from Kentucky, the Bluegrass State. By the late 1940s the line-up of mandolin, banjo, fiddle, guitar and bass was being copied so widely that the band's name became the genre's.
- Leaders and their Boys. Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs had the Foggy Mountain Boys, and the pattern stuck. Choose Band for names like Eli Stamper & the Mountain Rangers.
- Brothers. The Stanley Brothers and the Osborne Brothers made family harmony part of the sound: The Fugate Brothers, Childers & Spurlock.
- Places. Counties, creeks and forks in the river, many of them real places in Kentucky, Virginia and the Carolinas: The Rocky Fork Express, The Hiwassee Rangers.
- Pickers often go by nicknames or initials: Shorty Rowe, C.W. Tackett.
Album titles sound like tunes from the jam: breakdowns, specials and waltzes, such as Clinch River Special or Bear Creek Waltz.
Using a bluegrass band name
- Be careful with real places. Naming the band after a county or creek is traditional, but check nobody local already plays under it.
- Nicknames suit pickers. A name like Red or Doc makes a sideman memorable on a festival line-up.
- Jamgrass can be sillier. If you play long jams at festivals rather than straight bluegrass, a playful name fits.
