Good jazz names sound like a leader worth following: a real name with a nickname or a title, like Byron "Slide" Fairbanks, and a group named after them, like The Imani Caldwell Quartet. Jazz bands are usually named after whoever is leading them. This jazz name generator makes jazz musician names, groups from trios to big bands, and album titles in the style of the standards.
Eight good jazz names
All eight came from the generator:
- Byron "Slide" Fairbanks: a nickname that tells you he plays trombone.
- Professor Treadwell: a title instead of a first name, like the dukes and counts of the swing era.
- Zelda "Velvet" Adeyemi: a singer's nickname that describes the voice.
- The Imani Caldwell Quartet: the leader's name and the size of the band, the commonest jazz group name of all.
- Leroy Pryce & His Orchestra: the big band convention, as in Glenn Miller and His Orchestra.
- The Leeds Jazz Workshop: a place and a workshop, for a collective rather than a leader's band.
- January in Stockholm: a month and a city, like the standard "April in Paris".
- Three A.M. at the Jade Lounge: a time and a club, for a late-night record.
How jazz names itself
- Titles and nicknames: Duke Ellington, Count Basie and King Oliver all went by a title, and Charlie Parker by "Bird". Ellington got his as a boy, for his elegant manners.
- The leader's name and the line-up: the Dave Brubeck Quartet, the Miles Davis Quintet. Groups grow from trio to quartet, quintet, sextet, septet, octet and nonet; Miles Davis's Birth of the Cool sessions used a nine-piece band.
- "And His Orchestra" for the big bands of the swing era, like Benny Goodman and His Orchestra, or a name for the band itself, like Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.
- Album titles borrow from the standards (places, months, a person's name) or name the club where the set was recorded. The Village Vanguard in New York has given its name to many live albums.
Choose Musician for a player, with the gender filter for a bandleader or a singer, Group for trios to big bands, and Album for titles like Penthouse Sketches or The Montreal Sessions.
Using a jazz name
- Name the group after the leader if one person writes the tunes and books the gigs. It's the jazz convention, and it makes your name easy to find.
- Pick the line-up honestly. If you sometimes play as four and sometimes as five, a name like Smoke Collective saves reprinting the posters.
- For a live album, name the room you recorded in, the way jazz always has.
