How the Shoegaze Band Name Generator Works

It works from 252 names and name parts, which combine into over 1,900 possible results.

The choices:

What are you naming?:
- Band name, e.g. Lulldrift
- Solo project, e.g. glassbloom
- Album title, e.g. In Sleep

Each press gives you 8 names. "Show 8 more" adds 8 you haven't seen yet. Once you've seen them all, "Start again" shuffles the whole list again.

Good shoegaze band names sound the way the music does: soft, blurred and a little out of focus, like Lilac Comets or Drowsy Lanterns. This shoegaze band name generator makes dreamy band names, lowercase solo-project names and hazy album titles, in the spirit of the early-90s bands and the bedroom shoegaze that followed.

Eight good shoegaze band names

All eight came from the generator:

Lilac Comets: a soft colour and something distant.
Drowsy Lanterns: light seen through sleep.
Starsleep: two dreamy words run together.
Pale Swimmers: a hazy adjective and a moving noun.
My Sleepy Daydream: a nod to the "My ..." names of the first wave.
lilacdrift: a lowercase bedroom project, written the way they're written online.
hazy ferris wheel: a lowercase project name that's a whole picture.
Everything Is Blurry: an album title that describes the sound.

How shoegaze got its name, and its names

"Shoegazing" was a joke by the British music press in the early 1990s: the bands stood still on stage, staring down at their effects pedals. Melody Maker called it "the scene that celebrates itself". My Bloody Valentine's Loveless (1991), on Creation Records, is the album everyone points to, alongside Slowdive, Ride and Lush.

Shoegaze names are about weather, light and sleep, never anger:

Soft compounds: Moongaze, Dreambloom.
An adjective and a plural: Faded Mirrors, Velvet Gardens.
Lowercase solo projects, the style of the bedroom shoegaze that spread online: snowhour, sleepy halo. Choose Solo project for these.

Album titles are short and blurry: Pale Daylight, Glass Sea, In Reverse.

Using a shoegaze name

Keep the lowercase if it's a solo project. It's part of the look on Bandcamp and streaming services.
Match the artwork. A name like Lilac Comets practically designs the cover.
Search before you commit. Look the name up on Spotify, Bandcamp and YouTube, and check the social handles are free. Two acts with one name confuse fans and streaming services alike.

Slowed right down, shoegaze turns into slowcore: try the Slowcore Band Name Generator. For the jangly side of the 90s there's the Indie Band Name Generator, and for a hazy synth project, the Synthwave Name Generator. The Band Name Generator covers every other genre.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are good shoegaze band names?

Soft, dreamy and a little blurred: Lilac Comets, Drowsy Lanterns, Starsleep or Pale Swimmers. For a bedroom project, a lowercase name like lilacdrift fits the modern scene.

Why is it called shoegaze?

The UK music press coined it in the early 1990s because the bands stood still, looking down at their effects pedals while they played.

Are these real shoegaze bands?

No, they're made up in the style of the genre. Check Spotify and Bandcamp before you use one: dreamy words get used a lot.
