A lich is a wizard who has chosen undeath, binding their soul into a hidden phylactery so they can't truly die. In D&D they are among the most feared villains. This lich name generator makes ancient sorcerous names, fallen archmages with a title, and liches named for the tomb where they wait.
What is a lich?
A lich is a spellcaster who has made themselves undead to live forever, hiding their soul in an object called a phylactery.
- The word: lich is Old English for a corpse, the same word as in lychgate, the roofed church gate where a coffin waited.
- The phylactery: while it survives, the lich can't truly die. Destroy it, and the lich can be finished for good.
- Famous liches belong to other worlds: Vecna, Acererak of the 1978 adventure Tomb of Horrors, Szass Tam and Larloch of the Forgotten Realms, and Kel'Thuzad of Warcraft. They're all left out here, so every name is new.
Naming a lich
- Ancient names sound like they were old before the kingdom was founded: Xarthuun, Ozrekh.
- Fallen archmages keep their old rank: Archmage Valdris, First Necromancer Caligo.
- Tomb names are what the villagers call it: the Lich of the Sunken Vault.
