Good nonprofit and charity names say what you do or who you help, and are easy to remember when someone comes to donate: Spare a Spoon, Little Hearts Project, Woodside Animal Trust. This Nonprofit Name Generator suggests names for nonprofits, charities, foundations and community groups, by cause, including names built from your town or in memory of someone.
Eight good nonprofit names
All eight came from the generator:
- Spare a Spoon: a gentle ask that's also the name of a food project.
- Pass the Plate Community Pantry: says how it works and what it does.
- Little Hearts Project: warm and simple, for a children's cause.
- Room to Grow for Young Carers: names exactly who you help.
- Woodside Animal Trust: a classic, settled name for an animal charity.
- Willow Rewild: modern and specific to nature work.
- Sarah's Voice Foundation: a memorial name that gives a person a lasting voice.
- Kin Conservation: short and modern, for a wildlife group.
Charity, nonprofit or foundation?
Nonprofit is mostly American wording; in the UK people say charity, not-for-profit or community group. The ending you choose tells people what kind of organisation you are:
- Trust and Foundation: established, often grant-giving or set up in someone's name.
- Project: hands-on and local, like a food project or a youth project.
- Collective and Network: people working together.
- CIC: in the UK, a community interest company is a separate legal form for social enterprises, with its own rules.
Choose a cause and the generator picks words to suit it: plates and pantries for food, paws and sanctuaries for animals, woodland and rewilding for nature.
Check it's free before you print the sign
Press Check on any name, or use the Business Name Checker, to see whether it's free as a domain and a social handle and to search the company register. Before you commit:
- Company register: Companies House in the UK, or your state's business register in the US.
- Trade marks: search the UK IPO or USPTO register for anyone using the name in your field.
- Locally: search Google Maps for your area, since parents and clients will find you there first.
- Charity registers: in England and Wales, search the Charity Commission register; charities there with an income over £5,000 have to register. "Charity" is also a sensitive word in UK company names. In the US, check the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search.
For the full process, see Business Naming Best Practices. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
Avoid names close to a well-known charity. Besides confusing donors, the Charity Commission can direct a charity to change a name that's too similar to another one.
Names in memory of someone
A foundation set up in someone's memory often uses their first name, as in Sarah's Light Foundation. Choose From a name, or in memory and type the name. Talk it through with the family first, and make sure the name will still feel right on a fundraising page years from now.
