Good martial arts school names are strong and short, and many use a word from the art's own language: Mushin Karate Dojo, Horangi Kwan Tae Kwon Do, Força Jiu-Jitsu. The Martial Arts School Name Generator suggests names for a martial arts school, dojo, karate or taekwondo club, jiu-jitsu (BJJ) academy or kickboxing and Muay Thai gym: catchy, cool, classic, modern, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese or Thai words with meaning, your town or your own name. Choose what you teach to get the right words.
Eight good martial arts school names
All eight came from the generator:
- Mushin Karate Dojo: mushin, "no mind", is the clear, calm state karateka train for.

- Horangi Kwan Tae Kwon Do: horangi is Korean for tiger, and kwan means school or hall.

Words from each art
Each art has its own vocabulary, and a word from it shows you know what you teach:
- Japanese (karate, judo): a school is a dojo, "place of the way". Kan means hall, kai an association and ryu a style or school. Concepts like shoshin (beginner's mind), mushin (no mind) and kime (focus) make good names.
- Korean (taekwondo): a school is a dojang, and many take the name kwan. Nature words are common: baram (wind), byeol (star), namu (tree), pado (wave).
- Portuguese (Brazilian jiu-jitsu): BJJ grew in Brazil, so academies use words like tatame (the mat), caminho (path) and equipe (team).
- Thai (Muay Thai): kru means teacher, and the wai kru is the ritual of respect fighters perform before a bout.
Treat borrowed words with respect: check the meaning with your instructor or a native speaker, and use words from the art you actually teach.
Check it's free before you print the sign
A name only works if nobody else nearby has it. Before you order the sign, the cards or the van wrap, press Check on any name, or use the Business Name Checker:
- Domain and handles. Most clients will find you on Instagram or Google first, so get the .co.uk or .com and the same handle everywhere if you can.
- The company register. In the UK, a limited company name can't be the same as one already on Companies House. In the US, search your state's business register.
- Trade marks. Search the UK IPO or USPTO register for anything in your field, as a registered mark can stop you using a name even if the company register allowed it.
- Your area. Search Google Maps for martial arts clubs near you. A similar name a few streets away will confuse clients and reviews.
This is general guidance, not legal advice. For the full process, read Business Naming Best Practices.
Choosing for your club
- Parents search plainly, for "karate" or "kids' kickboxing" plus their town. Put the art in the name even if you choose a foreign word.
- Think about the badge. Your name will go on gi patches, belts and certificates, so short names work best.
- Check affiliations. If you're part of a governing body or style association, see whether it has rules about club names.
