Good slowcore names are as quiet as the songs: one small word, a far-off town, or a plain phrase about a house and the people in it. This slowcore band name generator makes band names, artist names and album titles for slowcore and sadcore, from Thaw to Grey Barn Choir.
Eight good slowcore names
All eight came from the generator, across its three formats:
- Parlour: one small domestic word, the classic slowcore band name.
- Carol's Kitchen: a name that sounds like somebody's house, because it is.
- White Motel Sweepers: a longer band name with a lonely place in it.
- Mount Tender: a solo project name that's half landscape, half feeling.
- Marnie Gill: a plain real-sounding name for a singer-songwriter.
- It Gets Dark at Four: an album title that's just a fact about winter.
- Albany in December: a town and a month, which slowcore titles love.
- Leave the Hall Light On: a small, kind instruction, said quietly.
How slowcore names itself
Slowcore grew out of American indie rock in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when bands like Codeine, Red House Painters and Low slowed rock right down. Low, from Duluth, Minnesota, are the best-known example of the naming style: one plain word that describes the music. Codeine and Bedhead did the same.
The generator follows that habit in three formats:
- Band names are a single quiet word (Sill, Ebb) or a small scene: Grey Church Farmers, Green Kitchen Sleepers.
- Artist names are plain real-sounding names, or a solo project named like a place: Mount Lonely, Lantern Slide.
- Album titles are long and specific, often a northern town and a cold month: Thunder Bay in January, We Drove Home in Silence.
Sadcore is the slightly bleaker cousin, and the same names suit it.
Using the names
- Check before you commit. Search the name on Spotify, Bandcamp and social media. Short one-word names are often taken, so a two-word name is easier to own.
- Keep the album titles plain. A slowcore title should read like something you'd say out loud, not a riddle.
- Thinking of selling merch or registering a label? Check the name isn't trademarked first.
If you write slowcore yourself, I've shared five tips for making better slowcore on my music site: two-chord progressions, 7th and 9th chords, rolling off the highs, sparse drums and keeping the imperfect takes.
