Good house music names sound warm and a little soulful, like the clubs of Chicago and New York the music came from: a real name with a "Lil" or "DJ" in front, a duo named like a soul group, a record title that could be a gospel line. This house music name generator gives you DJ aliases, duo and group names and EP titles in that tradition.
Eight good house music names
All eight came from the generator, across DJ names, duos and records:
- Lil Vince: a "Lil" in front, a habit house has had since Chicago.
- Imani Cee: a first name and an initial, friendly enough to put on a flyer.
- Mirrorball: a one-word alias that tells you exactly what kind of night it is.
- Marlowe & Okafor: two surnames with an ampersand, the classic production duo.
- The Mango Sisters: a group named like an old soul act.
- Kings of the Basement: a crew name that puts you in a sweaty room at 3am.
- Boiler Room Gospel: the church-and-club mix that runs through the whole genre.
- Til the Morning Comes: an EP title that sounds like a vocal you'd sing along to.
How house music names itself
House takes its name from the Warehouse, the Chicago club where Frankie Knuckles played from 1977. Across town and in New York, at the Paradise Garage where Larry Levan was resident, the same mix of disco, soul and drum machines was taking shape, and it gave us the word garage too.
The names have stayed close to those roots:
- Real names, lightly dressed up. House DJs often go by their own names with a "Lil", a "DJ" or a nickname added. Lil Louis and DJ Pierre are two from the early Chicago days. Choose DJ or artist for names like Kid Terrell or Rosa Haywood.
- Duos and groups. Masters at Work, the New York duo of Louie Vega and Kenny Dope, set a pattern of production teams with grand names. Duo or group gives you surname pairs and crews: Vance & Gaines, Sapphire Disco Club.
- Uplifting records. House vocals borrow from gospel, so titles talk about faith, freedom and getting through the night. EP or album mixes those with club words: Midnight Sermon, Warehouse Days, Garnet EP.
Using a house music name
- Say it over a microphone. A promoter will read your name out and print it in small type, so short and clear beats clever.
- Keep your EPs in a family. Plenty of house producers name EPs after one word plus "EP" or "Sessions", which makes a run of releases look like a set.
- Search before you print. Check Beatport, Discogs, Bandcamp and the streaming services, since dance music has thousands of one-word aliases.
