Good dark ambient names set the scene before a note is heard: a Latin word, a buried place, a numbered ward. Dark ambient is usually one person and a lot of reverb, and the name does much of the work. This dark ambient name generator makes project, collaboration and album names for dark ambient, drone and horror ambient.
Eight good dark ambient names
All eight came from the generator, across the three styles:
- Glacies: Latin for ice, and a single cold word, the dark ambient way.
- The Weeping Mine: a place underground, where the sound seems to come from.
- Cities Under Snow: a whole landscape in three words.
- Bells of the Grey Hour: a drone project named after one long, slow sound.
- Long Tones for Car Parks at Dawn: a drone album that tells you exactly what to expect, and where to listen.
- The Night Nurse: a horror ambient project named after a figure, not a monster.
- Annexe 19: a numbered room, which is somehow worse than a named one.
- Hymns for Damp Walls: horror ambient album titles work best when they're quiet and specific.
How dark ambient names itself
Dark ambient grew up in the 1980s and 90s alongside industrial music, with artists like Lustmord turning drones, field recordings and deep reverb into something closer to a place than a song. Drone goes back further, to the long, held tones of composers like La Monte Young, and Brian Eno's Music for Airports (1978) set the pattern for ambient album titles that name a space.
- Dark ambient names are cold and buried: Latin words, frozen places, catacombs. Crypta, Hiems, Inside the Permafrost.
- Drone names are calmer and very British here: estuaries, reservoirs, radio masts and long tones. Mills of the North Sea, Music for Reservoirs.
- Horror ambient names sound like a found tape: a house and a year, a hospital ward, someone's job. Wetherby House, 1938, The Sexton, The Whitlock Tapes.
Collaborations join two projects with an ampersand, the way split releases do: The Projectionist & the Lamplighter.
Using a dark ambient name
- Pick a name that suggests a cover. A frozen lake or a numbered ward gives you the artwork as well as the title.
- Single Latin words are popular, so search Bandcamp and Discogs first: there may already be a Somnus or two.
- Let the album titles tell a story. Horror ambient especially works well as a series: the same house, a different year each time.
