The funniest wizard names sound grand for about half a second. This funny wizard name generator has hundreds of them, with a title the wizard gave themselves (Gloop the Magnificent) or a surname they'd rather you didn't mention (Fizzledorf Thunderpants). Good for comic fantasy, parodies, and the party wizard who keeps setting things on fire.
The great comic wizards
- Rincewind, Terry Pratchett's cowardly wizard, can't spell his own job: his hat says WIZZARD. The Unseen University's staff include Archchancellor Mustrum Ridcully, the Bursar and Ponder Stibbons, all names that sound like they belong in a dusty common room.
- Tim the Enchanter, in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, is funny because his name is so ordinary.
- Dumbledore was a joke too: J. K. Rowling has said it's an old word for a bumblebee, chosen because she imagined him humming to himself.
What makes a wizard name funny
- Silly sounds: lots of z, wobble, fizzle and -wick. Say it out loud and it should sound slightly wrong.
- A grand title that doesn't fit: the Magnificent, the Wise, the Eternal, on someone called Noodlecrack.
- An honest one: the Forgetful, the Half-Baked, the Bewildered.
- A surname from the laundry: Thunderpants, Puddlewhisker, Gloomspoon.
Using a funny wizard
- Comic relief in a serious game: a wizard called Boffle the Bewildered can say things a grim hero can't.
- A whole silly campaign: give every wizard in the tower a name from here and let the players work out who's actually competent.
